September 2010 Meeting Summary

< Previous Meeting | Index | Next Meeting > At our last General Meeting on Wednesday 9/8/2010, Dr. Jean Tate, Ph.D. introduced us to the Friends of the Front Range Wildlife Refuges. Dr. Tate, the Friends' President, informed us that the Friends support the activities of the US Fish and Wildlife Service at theRocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge and the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge. Dr. Tate discussed the photographic opportunities available at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR, including the currently offered and open to the public photo tours. Images taken by many photographers at the Arsenal over the years served as a backdrop to her presentation. She then gave an introduction to the Rocky Flats NWR, which is not open to the public. After Dr. Tate's presentation, Chuck Winters showed images taken by multiple members of the Mile High Club at the Arsenal to further demonstrate the potential of the Arsenal NWR for nature photography.

Jean Tate told Mile High Members that the Friends of the Front Range Wildlife Refuges have planned two unique photo opportunities at the Arsenal NWR this fall:

The first, on October 2nd, will take 8 photographers in a van into the bison pasture, with Steve Berendzen, Refuge Manager, accompanying the tour. Participants should plan to enter the South Gate of Rocky Mountain Arsenal at 6:30 am sharp so that all can be in the van by sunrise at 6:56 am. Departure from the bison pasture will be at approximately 10:00 am. Tripods will be permitted.

The second, on November 20th, will allow 9 people to photograph fall happenings at the Arsenal, including mule deer and white-tailed deer during the rut. Participants should plan to enter the South Gate of Rocky Mountain Arsenal at 6:15 am sharp so that all can be in the van by sunrise at 6:49 am (daylight savings time ends on Nov 7th). The plan is to drive the van around the Arsenal NWR looking for wildlife and scenes that catch the photographers' eyes, ending at about 10:00 am. Tripods will be permitted.

Preference for both trips will be given to members of the Friends of the Front Range Wildlife Refuge in the following way:
Jean Tate will time/date stamp all calls to her at 720-341-9254 (cell) or 303-403-4748. She will then sort the calls into member and nonmember lists, and fill the slots first from the time/date prioritized members list before I look at the time/date prioritized nonmembers list. If you are not yet a member of the Friends of the Front Range Wildlife Refuges, but would like to be, complete the brochure (see this month's newsletter) and send in your time/date postmarked application and check to Dr. Jean Tate at 7485 Quartz Street, Arvada, CO 80007(rather than to the address indicated in the brochure). < Previous Meeting | Index | Next Meeting >
